on Fan-Translations and Re-Translations

Suddenly there's been a lot more fan translations and re-translations of old games coming out. Probably because of how advanced AI and Machine Translations have gotten. And I'm grateful for them, a lot of games that came out in the 90s were just localized so weird, and had a lot of mistakes. Its really cool to see what story the games were actually trying to tell. Even better are fan translations for games that never made its way west.

I even like the releases that gave us the original balance and gameplay of the Japanese games, that America changed to be a lot harder. That carried on for longer than it should have, and sometimes our versions were just way worse games because of it. The ones that come to mind to me are The 7th Saga on SNES, a game in which my mom is currently replaying through. With stat growth changed so much, magic classes were made to just be melee warrior classes but are just bad, and harder to get through.  And something way more recent, though still old is Onimusha 4 Dawn of Dreams on the PS2. The American version of Shin Onimusha, a version where boss life was 4 times higher, and heal orbs, and orbs in general just spawned less. Those games were a lot tougher and grindier than the original intent. So much so that they are worse games, and are harder to enjoy.

All that said though, a lot of translations are doing a bit too much now. Like referencing the sequels and outside content to fix "plot holes," adding dialogue to match how the sequels reused that scene, or restoring alpha cut content that wasn't in the original game. I don't want those. I just want to play the original game, how it was originally intended. WITH all its originally intended plot holes. Plot holes that were filled in later in its sequels, are what makes the sequels, good sequels.

    I don't like it.
